Backed by its joint-venture partnership with State-run Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, Texmaco Rail & Engineering is entering into the rolling stock maintenance and infrastructure development business in the domestic market.

The company, currently India’s largest wagon maker and exporter of rolling stock, is also gearing up to compete with global majors in Europe, Africa and West Asia.

Under their joint venture shareholders’ agreement, Texmaco Rail and RVNL have created a platform to deliver integrated rail solutions to both domestic and international customers.

The partnership is structured to leverage public-sector execution depth with private sector manufacturing agility; Texmaco holds 49 per cent stake and RVNL retains majority ownership.

“The demand for maintenance or lifecycle support of rolling stocks is opening up in India. The partnership provides opportunities for Texmaco to collaborate in the maintenance of rolling stock like passenger trains, Vande Bharat, metro and locomotives. For the next-generation high-speed rails, PSU companies are expected to have a critical role including, in some cases, developing infrastructure, as they would be high-value IP (intellectual property) works. RVNL was also eager to have a railway partner they consider the best in the country, to support them in these works,” says Sudipta Mukherjee, Managing Director, Texmaco Rail & Engineering.

The Kolkata-headquartered company supplies rolling stock globally and has also ventured into the maintenance business in overseas markets.

“The collaboration (with RVNL) will help us build scale and qualify us in larger projects globally,” Mukherjee says.

Texmaco also eyes the locomotive business, which has so far remained an exclusive domain.

“We want to make not only loco shells, but also components and maintain them. It is a huge opportunity for us. We are delighted to partner with RVNL and work for atmanirbhar Bharat, and are looking for more world-class Make-in-India products and services for the global stage,” the MD says.

This is not a tender-specific partnership, but meant to grow new lines of business. “It has a compounding effect. We will leverage our respective areas of strength and work on many innovative rail solutions for domestic as well as international markets,” he says.
