Pumped storage hydropower MoUs in Maharashtra to be implemented on timeline, says Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed a time-bound rollout of agreements for pumped storage hydropower projects to support the state’s energy sector. The state has signed 55 MoUs for 78,215 MW, with major investment and job projections. Several projects have Central Electricity Authority approvals, with more under review.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday ordered faster, time-bound action on agreements for pumped storage hydro-power projects. Fadnavis said the aim was to improve the state’s energy sector. The direction came during a review meeting held at the state legislature complex, according to a release from the Chief Ministers Office CMO.
Fadnavis said Maharashtra has signed 55 MoUs with companies for pumped storage projects. The total proposed capacity is 78,215 MW. The expected investment is about Rs 4,16,701 crore. Nearly 1,27,990 jobs are likely to be created, Fadnavis said.
Pumped storage hydro-power projects in Maharashtra: approvals and progress
Fadnavis said six projects, with a combined capacity of 10,300 MW, have received Central Electricity Authority approval for detailed project reports. Work on these projects has started. Fadnavis also said detailed project reports for five more projects, totalling 8,200 MW, are at the approval stage.
Fadnavis directed all concerned departments to work together on delivery. Fadnavis said coordination was needed so projects finish within fixed timelines. Cabinet ministers Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Girish Mahajan attended the meeting. Senior officials were also present during the review at the legislature complex.
Pumped storage hydro-power projects in Maharashtra: companies signing MoUs
The release listed several firms that have signed MoUs for these pumped storage projects. Major names include Adani Green Energy, NHPC, JSW Energy, THDC India, and Torrent Power. Other signatories include Tata Power Company, NTPC, JSW Neo Energy, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures, and Welspun New Energy.
ReNew Hydro Power, Mahagenco Renewable Energy, and Avaada Aqua Batteries have also signed agreements, the release said. Fadnavis said the upcoming projects will add to the state’s power generation capacity. Fadnavis also said the additions will support industrial growth. Fadnavis said the projects will create large-scale employment.
