Aadhaar Update 2026: Government Cancels 2.5 Crore Aadhaar Numbers; Check Your Status Now

India’s digital identity backbone Aadhaar has undergone a major data clean-up. In a recent update, the Ministry of Electronics and IT confirmed that the Unique Identification Authority of India has deactivated over 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers as part of an ongoing database rationalisation exercise.
According to the government, active Aadhaar cards are NOT being randomly cancelled. The deactivated Aadhaar numbers belonged to people who had passed away, in order to prevent fraud and misuse. The update was officially confirmed by Minister Jitin Prasada Parliament on February 4, 2026.
Why Were 2.5 Crore Aadhaar Numbers Deactivated?
The deactivation was carried out by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). UIDAI collected death records from the Registrar General of India and various state governments. Based on verified data, Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals were cancelled.
This was done to Prevent identity theft, Stop welfare scheme fraud and Avoid misuse of Aadhaar for financial scams
Officials clarified that this is a routine database clean-up exercise. India still has over 134 crore active Aadhaar numbers, and there is no mass cancellation of valid Aadhaar cards.

How to Check If Your Aadhaar Is Active
You can check your Aadhaar status in just a few minutes by following these steps:
Step 1: Visit the official UIDAI website: uidai.gov.in
Step 2: Click on “My Aadhaar”
Step 3: Select “Verify Aadhaar”
Step 4: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha code
If your Aadhaar is active, the system will confirm it immediately. You can also use the mAadhaar mobile app to verify your Aadhaar status. If the system shows your Aadhaar as invalid or inactive, you should contact UIDAI for clarification.
What to Do If Your Aadhaar Is Deactivated?
In rare cases, if your Aadhaar is wrongly deactivated, you can request reactivation. Here’s how:
Step 1: Visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or UIDAI office
Step 2: Fill out a correction/reactivation form
Step 3: Complete biometric verification (fingerprint and iris scan)
Step 4: After verification, UIDAI will review your case. You will receive an SMS update within about 30 days.
Report Aadhaar After a Family Member’s Death
The government is also encouraging families to inform UIDAI if a family member passes away. This helps prevent fraud and misuse of the deceased person’s Aadhaar. You can report this through the official UIDAI website.
